A Treat from a Guest

A bottle of red wine that was a gift from farm visitors. We had some visitors to the farm from Washington State recently and we were gifted with a delicious bottle of Merlot! It is not necessary to bring gifts when you visit, but it is sure sweet when we get such a surprise.

My sister-in-law had mentioned last year that she soaked sliced tomatoes in red wine and Italian seasonings before she put them into the dehydrator and they were delicious. The dried tomatoes can be chopped up and put into soups, stews and sauces. They are also a wonderful accompaniment to fresh mozzarella, fresh basil leaves and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

Her idea got me to thinking that I could save some of the gifted wine for just such a recipe. The wine was wonderful, it was hard to save some for the tomatoes, but I forced myself.

The tomatoes are great! So I went on to try a few more different tastes from the original.

Brandy soaked dried cherry tomates that had been cut in half.I used cherry tomatoes soaked in brandy then dried. It’s a nice twist to plain, old, dried tomatoes.  I will probably use these as garnish in green salads during the long winter ahead.
