Grass is Greener

Apparently the old adage is true, or at least it is true for four cows that were missing from the main herd. Two days ago, they decided to take a walk away from the main herd.
They meandered up the hill and munched tall grass that was growing in the open areas around the tall firs of the tree farm. They happened to find an area of the fence on the top of the hill that was not secure and walked right out and around the hill.
They seemed surprised to find themselves on the wrong side of the fence line on the North side of the farm. Unsure what to do, they just meandered through the meadow of 15 year old fir trees, nibbling and waiting for someone to come and unlock the gate.

We had planted this meadow after logging, so it no longer looks like a true meadow.  Most of the young trees are taller than my head. The tall grass and easy access to a little stream made for a good hangout for the group of four until we figured out where they were and opened the gate for them to come back to the main herd.

The four cows that were missing from the herd are walked back through the woods, down a logging road and down to the pasture at the bottom of the hill where the rest of the herd was grazing. IMG_4182
Once they were back on the right side of the fence, I walked them down the logging road the pasture where the rest of the main herd were grazing. The four escapees were reunited with the rest of the herd.
