Late Summer Fruit

The strawberry patch had produced well all spring. Once the crop was finished, I took the lawnmower through the patch on the highest setting possible and mowed off the foliage.

Through the hot days of summer, during the times when the irrigation was on for the cows, I had a sprinkler going on the mowed patch. Leaves re-grew, flowers bloomed and a few berries have started to ripen.

A bowlful of fall strawberries. It’s not the bounty we had during the regular strawberry season, but the few we did get are sweet and very good on breakfast pancakes.

This extra crop won’t affect the capacity for the plants to go dormant during the winter and reproduce another good crop in the late spring.
