Gooseberry

A prickly gooseberry bush begining to come out of dormancy. The gooseberry bush is showing signs that it is coming out of dormancy.

Along the prickly stems are very, very small tips of green beginning to emerge. These will be the leaves first then the fragile bloom will appear.

Since the bush itself is a wicked plant, I only have one planted. Just enough for a taste of the childhood I had on the home place. We had made games out of the sour berries, seeing who could eat the most without making a face. If we had only waited a couple of more weeks the green, hard, marble sized berries would turn to a pale yellow and sweeten considerably, but what fun would that have been?
