I watched my filbert (hazelnut) crop closely this year. The darn Jay Birds wanted my crop as much as I did.
Even with staking Butler the dog under the trees, and posting Mike under the big apple tree with a shotgun full of hot lead, the birds got the best of my harvest.
The birds were relentless, they were swooping in and stealing the nuts off the trees before they had fully developed.
Any nuts hitting the ground before I was able to pick them up became fodder for the ground squirrels. They would sneak in when Butler was sleeping or working with the cows.
I have to admit defeat on this battle.
