Twisty And Licorice

Black Angus cow and newborn calf in field. The herd needed to be moved from the far field into the big field by the barn. Just an hour before the scheduled move, we had a new addition to the herd.

Twisty had not waited to deliver her baby after the move.

I was behind the herd moving them toward the river. Mike was already on the side we wanted them moved to with a Gator load of hay. We figured we would give Twisty the option of staying with her baby right where she was for a couple of days, or she could coax the newborn to follow along with the herd.

For the new calf, it wasn’t an option. She wanted to stay up with the other cows /calves and preceded her mother across the field and under the big maple and alder trees along the river before going down to the water.

The river was a whole new experience for the newborn and she balked temporarily when she saw her mother step into the water. I stayed back in case the mother and calf decided not to follow along. Before the rest of the cows had made it across, Licorice moved right in and hugged to her mothers side through the swift water.

Welcome to the farm, heifer Licorice. Born 4/21/2019, weighing 70 lbs. She was sired by Prowler.
